Dev slowdown…
Well, some different thoughts tonight, let me think that I should slow down Wow Droid Armory development …
- I’m in vacation, and I realize I almost spend every night on this. I get tired.
- I have other projects that I’d like to work on, and it’s been seveal month that I plan to do it, “when WowArmo is done…”. And of course, this will never happen.
- I’ve just checked how many donation I had for 2 weeks that it’s been added to the app. It’s just ridiculous. There are more than 12.000 users each day, and I got only 6 (yes, six) donations during the last 16 days ??? I can’t decide if it’s sad or insulting, but I know this is definitively discouraging… (okay, I only count paypal donations, but anyway… You get the idea)
So I don’t know what I’m gonna do next, but tonight (hey, it’s almost 2 AM again !) I’ve just answered zillions of mails and fix bugs. I’m gonna sleep…

It is sad that you have gotten so few donations. People often forget a developer was paid over $200.00 an hour to develop an equivalent application for the iPod. For the $6 or so I paid for the app I find it well worth it. Especially dealing with PUGs. I hope to see more come from your house. This is a tool this Warcraft addict uses often. Thanks.

I just want you to know that you are appreciated this is an awesome app. And that maybe make a better version or a version with more options and ppl will buy it. I’m not sure I would have paid for an app like this had it not been free. Keep up the good work and don’t let obnoxious douche water drinkers get you down. They drink enima water too lol that why all they can do is talk shit.
by yovan on Jul 10, 2010 at 08:58
Might I make a suggestion? I find your app incredibly useful and well programmed. I think what’s keeping people from using the donation app on the market is that it is kind of a steep price for a “donation”, especially on an app as “casual use” as this one. Maybe lowering it to around .99 (or equivalent to) would entice more people into donating.
As for PayPal donations, I would wager that a very large portion of users don’t come to your site at all.
by cdn on Jul 10, 2010 at 08:59
Sorry to hear the app may become shelved. If you intended the app to NOT be free don’t offer it as such. You have done a remarkable job and the project may warrant paid app status, but don’t be discouraged by not getting paid for something offered for free. Personally I would pay a reasonable fee for this app.
by Mark Parker on Jul 10, 2010 at 23:05
You should release a new version, just not free. Thanks for developing this app btw…
by adre on Jul 10, 2010 at 23:28
That is horrible. I can’t believe that many people will use it and not contribute. Fail!! The price is fine… or even charge a bit more. But I think people are getting lazy when there’s a free version with the same features. Maybe cripple the free version with less features or a time limit. I would imagine as good as the app is people will come around and then pay for the app to get the full version. Just my two cents.
by Peter on Jul 10, 2010 at 23:28
Excellent app! Well done. I did contribute last week but agree that you’d get far more in if you charged .99 for it or had that as an option. Well done!
by dave in San Antonio on Jul 10, 2010 at 23:29
Simple limit free or make it a demo for 30 days
by chris on Jul 10, 2010 at 23:29
Stop trying to appeal to the good nature in people by making it donation only. You will only find disappointment. Start charging people and you will get what you want…
by Sharkbite on Jul 10, 2010 at 23:30
Or maybe you should offer it to Blizzard maybe they will buy your tool, because it is better like the own one *g*
by roman on Jul 10, 2010 at 23:30
Hey Orabig,
think about a new pricepolitic, your tool is great and i love it and i also bought it. Because i think its every dollar worth. The most ppl think its all free and why should i pay for it? I thinnk the simple resolution for it is, cancel your donation button and offer your tool only for money. No free version or so, just one to buy maybe for 0.99 dollar. So the ppl have to think about it to pay the money or let it be but your tool is the best one für android and there is no other like yours
. Two points speaks for this, first you will get only mails from customers and second you will get money for your hard work.
greetings roman

I am sorry to hear that you are thinking of stopping dev on this app. I haven’t used it in months due to limited functionality and bugs ie. the old 3d display. I just checked my toon on your app and I can’t believe how much you have added. Now the problem is. ..the app is totally worth the donation price you are asking but it doesn’t sound like donating is going to keep this app alive. I would donate if I knew for a fact that this app wasn’t going to be dropped.
by Sylaras (Bladefist) on Jul 10, 2010 at 23:38
Hi,
i’m a player of wow and i want to be an Android developer. Your app is very good and consider that there isn’t another like this one on the market.
Imho i suggest you to put away your initial message “i’m free…”, because is very boring.
Also i think that users will not buy an app just because there isn’t an ads.
So offering something useful for the pay version of this app is more interesting.
Sorry for my english, i hope that you will continue the developing of this app.
Have a nice holyday!
by Fonzie on Jul 10, 2010 at 23:39
You count only paypal donations, i bought your app through Android market with my credit card. What about this ?
Don’t You win money with publicity ?
If you want to win more cash, let the pub on the free version, limit how many info you display and reduce the price to the no free version.
Your work is really impressive, it is my favorite app and i bought it but please stop crying on donations, you already win money with other way for this app.
Or you can comment about every cash source generate with droid armory, not a selective one.
by mobidyc on Jul 10, 2010 at 23:40
Wow, so many comments about this…
At least, it made you react !
Well, thank you all for your support and ideas about that. Well, sorry for having frightened some of you. I don’t think I will drop the dev, but I will just allow me to slow it down. Also, making the app not available for free anymore is not in my philosophy. Anyway, I can consider to remove some functions to the free version.
For those who told me to make it more affordable (0.99 bucks or so), well, I already tried some months ago. I made it for €0.99 during several days, and the result was not brillant. (what if you reduce the price by 66%, and only get 30-40% more downloads ?)
Anyway, I can try again this price level, it’s not a big deal.
Oh, and by the way : the ads only get me some money if users click on it. And, well… I guess they have better things to do with their time.
by Orabîg on Jul 11, 2010 at 01:35
I thought the purpsoe of apps with ads was to make money from the advertiser vs. the user?
by Bewildered on Jul 11, 2010 at 07:26
Orabig,
I think you have done a kick-ass job with this app. I have not bought the app because I can’t find any way to do it other than using Google Checkout. I really prefer using PayPal to do my online purchases. I see that you mentioned having a PayPal donation option, but I cannot find any obvious links to use it, but I haven’t exhausted my search for it. I would love to donate to your development, as this is the single most used app on my device. If you can provide me a link to donate via PayPal (or point me to where you have it), I will do it straightaway. I hope that donations pickup, and that it becomes a good use of your time to develop this app further. It is unfortunate that development has been cheapened the way it has. It used to be a good source of income. Keep up the good work!
Also, I think it would be a good idea to cripple some of the features for the free app. It is human nature to get as much as possible for as little as possible, and you are giving all functionality in the free version. It may provide an incentive to buy the app instead of just removing the ads (although that is enough for me. I hate ads, LOL).

This is an excellent app, my thanks to Orabig for his continued development.
I only recently got round to donating, having realised I use the app nearly ever day, it is well deserved!
I suggest others with short arms and long pockets do the same.
by Kasr on Jul 11, 2010 at 21:01
I will personally make it a point to start clicking the ads if it could at all help reward you for the wonderful app that you have worked so hard on. Thank you so much for for all of the sacrifice and effort you have put into this product.
by matthew on Jul 11, 2010 at 21:01
For some reason the latest “donation” version never made it to the Android Market. The free version is 124 and paid is 122b. Any chance you can look at it? Thanks.
by Scott on Jul 11, 2010 at 22:31
Make a development team and get more programmers so you can focus on other projects.
by joakim w on Jul 11, 2010 at 22:58
I appreciate this application and the effort you have put into it. Although I am not a wow addict I am a player and enjoy the resources you have provided. I can personally say that I have taken advantage of you and your hard work and have overlooked the time you have spent on this application. I will go to the android market and donate right now, I do hope this helps you and you continue to create such awesome work. Thanx

As a developer myself, let me give you some pointers.
1. If you call it a donation, people won’t pay. We ignore starving kids on TV every day, so we can handle your little popup every so often. It’s harsh but that’s how it is.
Lesson: You have to call it purchasing the full version versus settling for the demo.
2. If you put all the features in the demo without any limits, most people will take advantage of that. Even from a purely logical perspective, why do I need to pay when I got everything for free?
Lesson: People won’t pay just to remove unobtrusive ads
3. If you want six bucks then you should probably provide some porn. That amount is ridiculous. One or two dollars is reasonable, depending on the extra features provided in the full one.
Lesson: 1000 people paying $1.00 is better than 100 paying $6.00.
You have a great app, you’re just not managing it right. Email me and I’ll tell you what to do.
by Dave (the one who helps with bugs) on Jul 11, 2010 at 23:03
I’d love to donate, but unfortunately, i dont have a credit card…
Instead im trying to make that up by everytime I start the app, I click the banner (unless its a pink one, I hate that color)
by Ikkerens on Jul 12, 2010 at 18:14
Make the free version a 5 day trial. I used the free version to check out the app, I liked the app so much I bought it. I think people now adays rather use full featured free apps rather that supporting a developer. Most people have no idea how hard it is to right an app for many different platforms. Some phones have touch screens and some don’t, and it’s not easy to make an app work on many different phones. So with that said “cripple the free version”.
by chris on Jul 12, 2010 at 19:34
I can’t afford to buy it cuz parents are really tight with my money, but I click adds every time I use it
by david on Jul 12, 2010 at 20:06
Personally this app should not be free.. its more advanced than some apps I purchased (for some reason) can you not put it on the market as a paid app? I think the problem is people won’t donate because they don’t “have to..” (myself included as one of those). But now knowing the full potential of the app I would purchase it to use it. If you can, charge for it, you’ll be rich. Gl
by Jay on Jul 12, 2010 at 22:00
Just to add something… It’s business. Take no prisoners my friend. I became very rich very quick when I forgot my morals and values lol
by Jay on Jul 12, 2010 at 22:08
I did not pay but if you charged a buck or two I would not hesitate to pay. Love the app.
by mk on Jul 13, 2010 at 01:34
Orabig, the moment you fix the female draenei missing hair bug I would happily purchase your app to support further development. Not having hair on your main character kinda sucks.
by Squishie on Jul 13, 2010 at 09:24
Pretty sure that unless you work for blizzard, it would be illegal to make this a pay to use App.
I love this app, and the work you’ve put into it is amazing, but if you start charging, I’ll just use my computer. The armory is free, and I don’t actually need it in my pocket.
by pixie on Jul 13, 2010 at 11:10
There was another wowarmory that I BOUGHT TO REMOVE ADS and now yours is the only one I find. I won’t pay another donation for that amount. 1 Buck I can live with knowing gone to waste.
by reen on Jul 18, 2010 at 20:24
Orabig you have created an amazing app that helps me and other WOW Addicts like myself daily. I will be donating when I get my card back. Thank you so much
by furcifur on Jul 19, 2010 at 03:59
This is a great app.
Don’t limit the free app to try to force people to pay. This is further from the open and communal notion software needs to be to progress in a future so dependent on software.
People do however need to realise that ‘free’ applications still cost to make. the developers time needs to be paid for. If you like the app and can afford to pay for it, then pay for it (via donation at a price you set), Don’t wait for things to be taken away before you value them.
Your post did remind me that I hadn’t donated and was starting to use it quite often. Fixed now.
Thanks for the great app. I hope my buying it via paypal donation helps you keep heart in the people.
by Larry on Jul 20, 2010 at 03:14
I would like to buy this app for sure if I could get a job but its hard to fine one in Cali for someone in a wheelchair and this cell was a gift to me. Maybe I could ask one of my family members to donate its worth it
by Fulker on Jul 21, 2010 at 04:11
Hey dude I want to say ty 4 taking the time to make this app work I am a big fan of wow and this app is insanely awesome even though my friends think its weird like I’m spying on their toons lol. Well just wanted 2 say ty I would donate but I’m 13 I have 0 complaints about this app but only 1 suggestion and its maybe adding glyphs I’m sure you’ve heard it a lot srry lol. And last thing if u r ever playin wow I’m on blades edge and my name is finalmove if u ever wanna hang.
by liam on Jul 21, 2010 at 10:44
Awsome application. But limit stuff Like only search 3 chars a day or something. Or mail me if you want help developing.
by thedarkstar on Jul 22, 2010 at 01:36
I just installed the free version of this, since I just got an android less than a week ago. I read this post before even looking up my toon. You’re getting a donation right now; keep up the good work.
by shanananana on Jul 28, 2010 at 23:52
Well, I live in Belgium and I’ve no access to commercial apps on Android market.
by denis on Jul 31, 2010 at 22:45
Hey bro.. first, I would like to say I and most people arew casual users of an app like this one and second it is an awsome app. For me personally I refuse to use paypal(big brother in desguise), they monitor and report on things they shouldn’t. That being said I agree with an earlier post… make it .99 or even 1.99 on the market and u will probably be surprised.
