Why enabling “Install on SD” would be very bad…
It was asked by many users, so I checked what I could do to enable the new Froyo feature. Technically, it is now possible to install Android application on the external storage (for example, the device’s SD card).
But I found very soon that it would be a very bad idea for Wow Droid Armory.
Why ? Well, when the user enables USB mass storage to share files with their computer (or otherwise unmounts or removes the external storage), any application installed on the external storage and currently running is killed.
The consequence is that any widget that have been installed is simply killed AND removed.
So Google’s opinion about this is very clear :
“If your application uses any of the features listed above [widget...], you should not allow your application to install on external storage”

Hey,
Can we not have the option though? I know myself and a few others that don’t use the widget. The option to leave it on the phone memory would remain, therefore leaving the option available for people that do and do not want it? I may be misunderstanding apologies if I am

I agree with dan

Dev is right for not allowing the option. n00bs will experience detrimental effects and 1 star the app, blaming it for their ignorance. Be steadfast, don’t allow it.

I agree that still having the option, with an explanation, would clear it up. I also don’t use the widget. Thanks for all your work!

@Roy Price : That’s exactly the reason why I’m afraid to enable this option. I’m so sure that there will be too many things like this :
“- Hey, this app sucks. All my widgets are gone and they were there yesterday… Baam, 1 star, and one pissing comment on the market…”
I already have too comments like :
“-tis sux, how doI play tha game ?
- Well, you can’t, just read the Faq… This is not a game for Android
- Useless ! (put 1 star, uninstall and leave…)”
@Hey : I cannot put an explanation on it, because I cannot allow it “as an option”. This will not be activated from the app, so I have no control to put a warning for users.

But people can give you 1 star for not giving us the option too just saying

I would say the best medium for you would be to allow the option but specifically warn in a dialog that it would cause that function. Remember, not all of us mount our sd cards, for instance, I usually transfer files over wifi or bluetooth. I don’t even have 2.2 available yet, but I could really see install to SD being a useful feature as Droid Armory is a pretty big program and does take up a lot of phone space, and some people don’t use the widget at all.

I have the app installed on my sd card. Works fine even when I set it to storage it still keeps the widgets. Just takes a few seconds to repopulate them when the mass storage is turned off.

Make a froyo version then with no widget I would even pay more for a froyo version

Ok, you all won.
See 0.9.124 release…

People are too retarded to read a warning. Don’t you know? Everyone just scrolls through till they can click accept.
What is the purpose of having an SD card option? To save phone space? I dunno. People are gonna spam one star like tards.
My widget doesn’t work anyways. It doesn’t apply the frame I choose and the picture is just a stadard undead warlock picture. Is the picture supposed to be standard? And why does the frame not work?

I think a solution to this is easy.. donation allowances the use of 2 apps. One app with SD support and one without. Same code, just two different downloads, keeping the comments separate. Just an idea .

Read in a comment today :
“by Ocelot (September 8, 2010)
Widget stopped working (doesn’t even show in list) when moved to SD card. (Moto Droid 2.2)”
See ? =)

Now, y’see, this is why you root your phone and install a custom ROM with A2SD+. It basically creates an ext3(linux filesystem.. android is linux based after all..) partition on your SD card that, with a little linux techno mqgic, basically adds part of your SD card to the phone’s internal storage to allow you to have lots of nice big apps on your system with no problems, and yes, that includes plugging your phone into USB. Look into it, if you need more app space for your phone. :p
